If I were to put together an Anthology (and I’ve thought about this before, believe me) I’d want it to reflect what I like, but also have bits and pieces of me shine through.
To me, it would be very similar to making someone a mixed CD, so it’s very important that everything fits right and there aren’t any dead spots. And the order has to be right. Like, putting Iron Maiden right before Jenny Lewis at your own risk…
This list, like me, is a little erratic. It has some serious. Some laugh-out-loud funny. Some arguably indiscernible.
So I give you my list thus far:
A Good Man is Hard to Find – Flannery O’Connor
The Inferno – Dante Alighieri
Candide- Voltaire
I Love Everybody: And Other Atrocious Lies – Laurie Notaro
A Streetcar Named Desire – Tennessee Williams
Fleurs du Mal- Charles Baudelaire
The Telltale Heart – Edgar Allen Poe
Bartleby, the Scrivener – Herman Melville
For Desire – Kim Addonizio
The Prince – Niccolo Machiavelli
Fates Worse Than Death – Kurt Vonnegut
A Modest Proposal – Jonathan Swift
Leaves of Grass – Walt Whitman
To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee
Self-Reliance- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Writing and Difference – Jacques Derrida
What do Women Want? – Kim Addonizio

And of course, I love books far too much for this list to be the only works I’d put in an anthology. Try to cram four years’ worth of an English major into one Anthology? It can’t be done. And, It’s possible I forgot a few. hundred.
What would go in your anthology?
