Can I have more time off as my wedding gift?

May 29, 2008 | family, weddings

I miss these people.

Getting married in October certainly has its disadvantages – I have to save up all my vacation time (and I don’t get a whole lot). A good number of my family’s birthdays are in June (including mine, yay!) and I would love to go up to Charlotte for a visit towards the end of the month. The fact is, it’s not in the cards. Oscar works most Saturdays and summer is their busiest time, so we *could* go and leave around noon on Saturday, drive the 4 hours, stay through mid-afternoon on Sunday and then come home… But that doesn’t sound like a worthwhile trip to me. $100 on gas for breakfast and a place to sleep?

Of course, July 4th is also doable. It falling on a Friday this year is awesome, because it means 3-day weekend for everyone. We can do this, but, my parents and my cousin are planning to be in town the weekend BEFORE for my grandma’s birthday. And even my good friend (and bridesmaid) that lives in Charlotte will be out of town on the 4th. Poop. I don’t know what to do. I want to see my family at least *some* before the wedding, but it doesn’t look like it’s possible.

Plus, The goal is to have the couples/co-ed shower in late July sometime, and I would love for Jen (ha, I outed her) to be able to make that because she’s planning to drive up to visit.

So, do I wait for Oscar and go with him the weekend of the 4th? Or do I satisfy my wanderlust and go alone the weekend before, leaving at the buttcrack Saturday morning and coming home Sunday afternoon?
